PROCESS

I've spent entirely too much time on Neopets in my lifetime and was so excited to get to be in a big faerie group! The Grey faerie is my favorite (And source of the Grey part of Ara Grey!), but I wanted to make some crazy wings, and in the end settled on the most Darkest Faerie.

The dress is blue cotton lined with red cotton with light blue appliques around the collar, cuffs, and hem. I wanted something easy to sew, easy to wash, and easy to wear, so plain old Kona cotton was the answer. The appliques were a bit of a pain, but I figured that doing a nice wide and open zig zag stitch would be enough for my first big foray into appliques.

The skeleton of the wings were made from PVC pipe that I cut and heat formed around a custom made jig to make the relaxed shape. I glued the three "fingers" together and then glued down some old pleather for the wing part. I like the pleather because it has a nice texture, is thick, and holds spray paint well. I used plain lavender craft foam to make the scales. Somehow I got extremely lucky and the lavender foam matched the lavender paint almost flawlessly so I didn't have to do a whole lot of color matching.

The wings fit into my costume the same way that the Belldandy ones do: into the same corset that I wear under the dress. I gave the dress a scooped neckline in the back to give me space for the wings to poke out and everything worked out great! It was a very comfortable costume to wear and super nostalgic!
